Finance Committee - FAQ
How often does the Finance Committee meet?
The Finance Committee meets every other Tuesday (with an exception or two for holidays and such - check the schedule posted on the home page), at 5pm in Gardner 106. By law, requests are due 72 hours before the Finance Committee meeting begins. For example, if the Finance Committee is meeting on Tuesday, requests are due by the preceding Saturday by 5:00 pm EST.
How to become a certified treasurer?
To become a certified treasurer of a Student Organization one must pass the Treasurer's Test on Title V of the student code administered by the Student Body Treasurer. Document below describes the procedure in detail:

How to become an officially recognized student organization?
Instructions on becoming a recognized student organization (SO) can be found on Carolina Union website (http://carolinaunion.unc.edu). If you have any questions, address them to Assistant Director for Student Activities Mr. Jon Curtis (jon@email.unc.edu).
Is my organization officially recognized?
The database of officially recognized student organizations is kept by the Carolina Union. This is the database the Finance Committee uses to establish eligibility for funding, if you're not in it -- we can't give you money. Check it out:
What is Title V?
Title V is the part of the Student Code dealing with Finances. It lays down the rules of financial transactions of the Student Government.

I was a certified treasurer last year, am I still certified?
Treasurers must get recertified every fiscal year: July 1, XXXX - June 30, XXXX+1.
We were given $300 for Travel, can we print 1000 flyers instead?
No. Cross-category spending is forbidden. A group can request to have funds transferred from one category to another by visiting SAFO and filling out a Transfer Request Form. All transfers must be authorized by the Student Body Treasurer and the Finance Committee Chair(wo)man.

SAFO is located in new Student Union addition in the South-Eastern corner of the pit, its windows face Wachovia and the old Student Union, 919.962.1159
Where does the money come from?
Each student pays, among other things, $39.00/year Student Government fee. Considering the number of students attending UNC (~27,000), the student activity budget is
- ~ $1.0 million
1/3 of that goes to the Student Union
- ~ $667,000 remaining
1/4 of the fees collected from graduate students (~10,000 students) to GPSF
- ~ $579,000 remaining
5% to S TV
- ~ $529,000 remaining
4% to WXYC
- ~ $498,000 remaining
$100,000 to SAFO (Student Activities Fund Office) for managing student groups' accounts
- ~ $400,000 + reversions from previous year remaining
This money is left for distribution by the Student Congress.
